In the course of maintaining gardens we've provided a helpful organic garden calendar for our clients. This calendar goes through the recommended steps to take to maintain your garden in each of the four seasons.


 

S P R I N G

 

Invasive plant control, Garden pest management, Pond clean up, Adding annual color spots, Irrigation system adjustment

 

• Prepare new containers for plantings
• Apply 3-4" of mulch around new and established plants
• Don't remove foliage from spring-flowering bulbs
• Overseed lawn in thin areas
• Plant annuals, when danger of frost has past
• Deadhead or cut back perennials after they bloom to promote rebloom.
• Watch for aphids and mildew on roses

 

 

S U M M E R

 

Organic supplementation, Invasive plant management, Garden pest management, Natural target pruning

 

• Apply fertilizer as needed
• Prune any hedges
• Watch for signs of pests and diseases
• Prune and train any vines, roses, espaliers, etc
• Watch for ripening fruit and vegetables- harvest when possible
• Thatch and aerate lawn
• Deadhead and cutback blooms on annuals and perennials

• Reseed lawn
• Clean up annual and perennial beds
• Shut off, drain and check irrigation systems
• Plant spring flowering bulbs
• Apply mulch to planting beds
• Start cover crops in vegetable beds

• Prune storm damaged plants
• Add lime to soil
• Plant bareroot materials
• Store garden equipment- tune up mower
• Divide and propagate any overgrown perennials
• Plant summer flowering bulbs
• Prune roses
• Plan vegetable gardens
• Watch for red thread fungus disease in your lawn
